The Great Run around Lake Viljandi is the oldest running event organized in Estonia, having started in 1928. The route circles around Lake Viljandi, covering a distance of 12-13 km. The start and finish of the race are located at the Viljandi city stadium, and there are two checkpoints along the way at Orika Bridge and Viiratsi Bridge. On May 1st, the race commemorates the late record holder Benno Viirand, in whose honor one kilometer of the race has been named.
Highlights
- The Great Run around Lake Viljandi was won by Leonid Latsepov and Laura Maasik, with Latsepov finishing in a time of 36:59.
- Secondly, Kenyan runner Julius Muriuki finished just two seconds behind Latsepov.
- The head of the running organizing committee, Mati Jürisson, emphasized the desire to commemorate Benno Viirand's contribution to the development of running.
